Saginaw Bay Walleye

The Angler Qwest Pro Troll is the best Saginaw Bay walleye boat I’ve ever fished from, and that’s saying a lot because I’ve been chasing those fish for more than 35 years.

It has plenty of room for all my gear and fishing buddies, handles rough water like a boat twice the size….and I can run lots of rods to maximize my time on the water.

The Pro Troll is a great combination of comfort, ride, stability and fishability…and for me, it’s the perfect choice for trolling Saginaw Bay walleye.

I love “skinny water” walleye and have found when the fish are in shallow, it can make them an easy target.  When walleye come in close to shore to feed they’re often aggressive and you’ll know right away if the fish are there.

I’ve caught walleye in as little as three feet of water but my preferred range is seven-to-10 feet although the past couple of yearsI’ve found fish a little deeper because of the high water levels.

My technique is pretty simple.  I troll crankbaits behind Off Shore planer boards with #7 Flicker Shads as my “go to" bait, but I’ve been known to run the old faithful Hot-n-Tots as well.  Because of the depth, you can run those baits close to the boards so  I’ll set them back just 10-15 feet sometimes on cloudy days, but my normal lengths are 20-50 feet back.

Colors will vary from day to day and weather conditions, but I prefer silver, orange or green and purple.  It’s still hard to beat a purple Hot-n-Tot.   All of my baits have rattles because the skinny water is often dirty because of river flow or wind and I think the rattle helps fish find the baits.

For speeds, I’m pretty consistent around 2.5MPH, but if the action is slow I don’t hesitate to experiment.

Saginaw Bay has a tremendous population of eater size walleye, with an occasional trophy fish thrown in to keep it interesting.  I’m convinced there’s no better way to enjoy that fishery, than on an Angler Qwest Pontoon.
